Child Care In Norfolk Child Care In Norfolk As childminders, we are responsible for the safety of children in our care. The chart below is provided to help you determine if your car seats meet the current regulations

From May 2008, all child restraints (baby seats, child seats, booster seats and booster cushions) sold in the UK must comply with the United Nations ECE Regulation 44.03 standard or later version of the standard.

Although new child restraints must conform to R44.03 or later version of the standard, people who have child restraints that conform to British Standard or to an earlier version of R44, may continue to use them, Child seats to the 44.03 standard have been on sale for many years. Please remember car seats should be checked on a regular basis and should never be used after they have been involved in a car accident.

With effect from September 2006, the rules changed and THE DRIVER is now responsible for:
  Front seat Rear seat
Child under 3 years of age Correct child restraint must be used. Correct child restraint must be used. If one is not available in a taxi, may travel unrestrained.
Child 3 years to 135cms in height (and under 12 years) Correct child restraint must be used. Correct child restraint must be used where seat belts fitted.

Exceptionally, an adult belt must be used if:
in a taxi, the correct child restraint not available
on a short and occasional trip, the correct child restraint is not available
two occupied child restraints prevent fitment of a third **
Child 12 or 13, or over 1.35 metres (approx 4ft 5ins in height) Seat belt must be worn if fitted. Adult seat belt must be worn if fitted.

Additionally:

• Children under 3 years MUST use the child restraint appropriate for their weight in any vehicle (including vans and other goods vehicles).

• In vehicles where seat belts are fitted, children 3 years and over up to 135 cms in height (approx 4ft 5ins) MUST use the appropriate child restraint.

• Rear-facing baby seats MUST NOT be used in a seat protected by a frontal air-bag unless the air-bag has been deactivated manually or automatically. WARNING! Be aware that de-activating your airbag(s) may invalidate your insurance and it is illegal to drive without valid insurance.

The Driver is also responsible for wearing their own seat-belt (if fitted). Adult Passengers must wear seat-belts in either the front or the back of the vehicle (if fitted). ** Childminders should ensure that ALL children in their care have appropriate restraints when travelling in a vehicle.

ISOFIX stands for “International Standards Organisation FIX”. It is a new standard for installing child seats into cars, which is being adopted by vehicle manufactures and is intended to make fitting child seats quick and simple.
