Craft activities for children

Design your own room!

The idea is to allow children to design and decorate a room – on paper!

They would need a large piece of paper to draw the outline of their room. If they like they could first decorate the background of the room with paint or fleet tip pens or even old wallpaper.

From catalogues or magazines they could then cut pictures out of the things they would like to go into their room and then stick them in.
It doesn’t have to be just furniture it could be toys and pets as well – basically their room – their design – their choice!

So you would need:

  • A large piece of paper
  • Magazines and catalogues
  • Scissors and glue
  • Paint, felt tips, crayons, old wallpaper, fabric, etc
  • NB as scissors are involved this activity is for children aged from 3 to 4 years although it could be adapted if the pictures were cut out before hand and the younger children selected what pictures they liked to glue on.

    Animal Hotchpotch
The idea is to create a new species of animal!
Each child is given a card with the name of an animal’s body part on. The number of parts is dependant on the number of children taking part.
Next each child is given a blank piece of paper or card so they can draw the part of animal they have been given. It could be a head, ears, front legs, back legs, tail, etc. It is entirely the child’s choice what animal they pick (they may even want to make one up!) and once they have drawn an outline of the part how can cut it out and decorate it, ie painting, collages, crayons, etc. When all the children have finished their creatures’ part they can reveal them to each other and bring all the parts together to create a new and fun species AND THEN NAME IT!

    So you would need:

  • Sheets of paper/ card
  • Scissors and glue
  • Paint, felt tips, crayons, collage materials
  • Large sheet of paper for the new animal
  • Books on animals so children can see what the parts look like.
  • NB This could be adapted so that the parts are like a jigsaw puzzle and then brought together.
